CHILD SUPPORT

There are occasions in a child’s life when circumstances disrupt normal routine such as the diagnosis of a life limiting illness or a death within the family.

Many children appear to cope one minute and then be upset or ‘act up’ the next. Family members can interpret this as insensitivity to the feelings of others and the family may feel overwhelmed and/or unable to cope.

Our Child Support Service is led by a highly skilled and experienced nurse who is able to provide one to one/family support either within the school, at the hospice, in their own home, or on neutral territory. Access for support is also available for teachers/other healthcare professionals who may be involved.

Prior to commencing of support, consent is always obtained from parent/guardian/next of kin.

A variety of age relevant aids may be used including reading materials, workbooks, videos etc to enable the child to express their feelings in a controlled safe environment

Referrals can be made by teachers, healthcare professionals or parents.
Support sessions usually last for 50 minutes and on average 2-6 sessions are needed. Ground rules are discussed and agreed at the first session, which include confidentiality and the potential to share information with designated people, if necessary.
